International Volunteer (ESC)

What are we trying to achieve with volunteering?

Through the systematic contribution of volunteers inside the institution, we aim to lower the consequences of institutionalization. We offer the children social, emotional, affective and educational support. We also aim to raise awareness  in society concerning disability and social inclusion, and to empower vulnerable social groups.

Volunteering at Tandem

Together with the coordinators and the volunteers from the local community, the ESC volunteers organize and carry out a variety of leisure time, educational, creative and sports activities for the children and youngsters living in the institution PAAPAV.

Every volunteer has a different program, depending on the children s/he is working with and the personal strengths and interests of the volunteer. However, all volunteers share the following tasks:

  • In the mornings: activities with the children and youngsters who do not attend school
  • In the afternoons: carrying out different group activities in our activity center inside the institution
  • Going for excursions outside of the institution
  • In the summer: going to the beach of PAAPAV and swimming with the children

The objectives of these activities are to:

  • Offer additional stimulation, attention and education to the children and youngsters, who are heavily impacted by their institutionalization
  • Help the children and youngsters to spend their free time in a constructive and enjoyable way
  • Create a bridge from the institution to the society and support the target group’s inclusion, e.g. by offering outings outside of the institution

Besides that, we organize and carry out the following activities:

  • Individual learning projects for specific children (practicing self-help skills, learning the alphabet, learning how to use money, cooking lessons, computer lessons, english lessons…)
  • Social inclusion (visiting a supermarket, a bank, a museum, or a post office)
  • Raising awareness in the local community about disabilities and the life inside of an institution and trying to involve Greek people to volunteer in the institution
  • Fundraising to sponsor activities with the children
  • Any other activity depending on the abilities, interests, needs or desires of the children
